Inside the Stockport club that sells wine for £1 and pints for £1.60

Having a nice glass of wine, or a cold pint, or a refreshing gin, has become increasingly expensive - you'll usually struggle to get change from a fiver, particularly in town centres.

But there's one spot in Stockport that's serving up drinks at a ridiculously reasonable price, with the added bonus of Sky Sports, prosecco nights and snooker tables.

Where is this pound-stretching paradise, you ask?

This is the Marple and Mellor Conservative Club, a sprawling building with two bars and a large function room that's become an integral community hub in the area.

Here, you could be sipping on a wine that costs £1 or nursing a pint for £1.60. Name us a better drinks deal than that in any Greater Manchester establishment that isn't a supermarket and your own sofa.

While you will get a good-value beverage here, what you won't get is any sort of high-end interior design - we're talking an honest-to-goodness mix of patterned carpets, blue fairy lights and navy banqueting chairs, with drinks at one bar served through a security railing.

It's a committee-run club that's open to both members and non-members, and despite the connotations of the name, this isn't a political club.

A committee member said: "It's not a political club in any way shape or form. It's still called the Conservative Club from the old days.

"We did have a political background back then but now it's more of a social club, because we don't give any money to political parties and we don't get any money from there. We're just self-sufficient."

Membership costs £10 for an entire year, and gets you access to an annual members' night with a free buffet, a raffle and entertainment - and for those with kids, membership also includes a free children's party with an entertainer.

Members also have exclusive access to Jackpot Joker, where the cash prize can nudge up to £1000, and use of a snooker room with champion-size tables.

First opening some 150 years ago, the club took a lean towards the entertainment side of things 25 years ago with its first open mic night.

Now, there's a busy social calendar at the Marple Conservative Club, with events on throughout the week from yoga and darts to Zumba, line dancing, and a weekend open mic night.

When a big football match is on, the staff wheel out a free buffet and stick the match on 92-inch screen with surround sound - they've got both BT Sports and Sky Sports.

There are theme nights, parties, and charity events, with a recent Royal Ascot Ladies' Day afternoon tea event raising £860 for Maggie's.

Sunday wine club, where a glass costs just £1 (ABNM Photography)

The wine club, which runs between 3pm and 6pm every Sunday, sees glasses of wine (currently Kumala) served for £1 for a small glass, £1.50 for a medium, or £2 for a large.

The Marple Conservative Club has a gin selection worthy of any city centre pub too, ranging from locally-made Didsbury Gin and Zymurgorium Unicorn Gin to Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray.

On the taps, the cheapest beer is Sam Smith's, ringing in at a whopping £1.60 a pint. Most bars in the Northern Quarter would charge you triple that without a second thought.

There's also Moretti, Carling, Coors Light and Stowford Press cider, plus whiskeys, rums, vodkas and simple cocktails starting from £3.

"It's a little gem in Marple," said a committee member. "It's the cheapest pint, you can watch the football, you can have a nice gin.

"It's a busy club, but it's a nice environment and a nice club. We're always looking for new ventures and new things to do.

"It's quite a varied crowd - anything from 18 to 90 years old! We open earlier on Fridays so we get a younger crowd in then, they come in to play pool after work.

"We need to get it out there how much we offer."
