Inside the sell-out Sausage and Cider Festival that drew huge crowds to Newcastle

More than 1,000 people packed out Newcastle Civic Centre to enjoy a day of cider, sausages and live music when a popular festival returned to the city on Saturday.

The Sausage and Cider Festiva l proved to be a hit with revellers who ate and drank until their heart's content at the sold-out event on February 19.

Simon's Sausage cooked up a storm outside of Newcastle Civic Centre, offering a range of tasty options including "continental sausages" like Bratwurst and Cheesewurst, as well as "British bangers," with flavours such as maple and chilli and jalapeno.

Gluten-free and vegan options were also available at the event which was returning to the city for the first time since 2019.

Organisers were delighted with the turn out for the festival which attracted 1,600 people throughout the day and into the evening.

"We have 20 different options of cider, we suggest people have half-pints instead of full pints so they can try more,""organiser Geoff said.

"We also have a couple of gins and prosecco.

"Outside we have a selection of different types of sausages.

"We have a band called Kings of Indie Rock on and a DJ throughout the day.

"We are really pleased with the turn out."

Those feeling brave were also able to take part in a chilli eating competition or have a go at the hot dog eating competition where participants were competing to see how quickly they could eat one.

"Some people are really good at it and some people are not very good at it," organiser Geoff said.

"People give it a go and they get into it!"

Friends Charlotte Berry and Ryan Wood, both 35, had travelled from Peterlee to enjoy an afternoon of eating and drinking at the event.

"It is the first time we have been to this festival," Charlotte said.

"It's nice to be able to enjoy being out on a Saturday and the atmosphere seems nice and relaxed.

"It's a part of getting back to normality."
