Inside the once-derelict Newport hotel that's been transformed into an exciting new venue

Little more than four months ago, the Westgate Hotel in Newport was a dusty, derelict shell of its former self.

The building, famed for its Chartist connection, had been left abandoned for nearly 20 years.

Its last-known use was a nightclub, following a lengthy stint as a city centre hotel, complete with a bar and grand ballroom.

And now the historic building has been given a new lease of life thanks to Newport Rising and its team of volunteers.

The group is holding a long weekend of events from November 1-3 to commemorate the Chartist uprising that took place in Newport in 1839.

This year marks 180 years since 22 men were shot dead by the authorities outside the Westgate Hotel, on Commercial Street, during the uprising.

Led by John Frost, the Chartists marched to Newport to fight for better voting rights as per their six-point charter.

It was the last large-scale armed rebellion against authority in Great Britain.

Newport Rising Festival has a series of events planned for the newly-revamped Westgate Hotel, including live music and a torch-lit march which culminates at the venue.

You can see the full events list on the Newport Rising Festival website .

Project manager and festival organiser, David Daniel, said: "In a very short space of time, a team of dedicated volunteers has transformed what was a derelict hotel from a dusty, dirty boarded up space in Newport’s City centre into a welcoming and exciting new venue.

"The team has repaired floors, walls, fixed plumbing and reconnected power and lighting to three floors - creating a vibrant space in preparation for Newport Rising Festival 2019, taking place this weekend from November 1-3."

He added: "The festival is backed by local charity Our Chartist Heritage and in the spirit of the Chartists aims to inspire new generations to achieve positive change by acting together.

"The volunteer team exemplify that spirit and through their hard work have revitalised an iconic building in the city centre, which will host a number of events including spoken word, performance, workshops and live music across the festival weekend."
