Inside the new bar and grill restaurant that 'brings the States to Bolton'

Huge hot dogs, TVs screening American sports, and 'moonshine' cocktails will be the order of the day as a brand new bar and restaurant opens in the centre of Bolton.

51Fifty officially flings open its doors this weekend (December 4) at the former Blind Tiger venue in Nelson Square.

Co-owner Chris Walker promises that it will be like 'nothing else' currently in the town and admitted that its theme is unashamedly inspired by American culture.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, ahead of the bar's launch, Chris said: "The idea behind it is something I've wanted to do for years and years.

"I've spent quite a lot of time over in the States but because of the restrictions I haven't been able to get over... so I just thought I'd bring it here.

"There's nothing really like this around here.

"Over here we just have pubs and restaurants, over there everything's combined into one with music, TVs with sport."

Inside the venue, there are a large number of TVs showing sports such as American football and ice hockey. There is also a games room on the upper level, with pool tables, fruit machines, and a pinball machine.

Its decor includes motorbikes and a mixture of country and rap music plays through the speakers.

The owners' sense of humour also shines through with messages around the bar such as 'no great story every started with someone eating a salad'

"A few people who've walked past have popped in and said it looks awesome," Chris added.

"We don't want it completely perfect. We like everything to be a bit off. We like having a laugh. We want it to have that dive bar feel.

"We've got a late licence but we'll just be open as long as people are coming through the doors and enjoying themselves."

Along with foot-long hot dogs, the menu includes burgers, nachos, wings, and tater tots.

Desserts include key lime pie and churros, while the cocktails are made with 'moonshine' - a type of alcohol that got its name from booze sold illicitly during the prohibition era.

Speaking more about the menu, Chris said: "Our chef is really good and he's spent a lot of time in the States. He knows about the presentation and feel of the food.

"Over here hot dogs are usually full of s*** but out there they actually use beef and they have more of a red colour to them. They're ridiculously big as well.

"The burgers we've got in aren't American but they've won awards and the sauces for the wings are brought in from the States."

It hasn't been plain sailing for Chris and his business partner Brett Bortoft.

After taking the venue over in March 2021, they originally earmarked an opening date of June, but it had to pushed back as the scale of the refurbishment dawned on them.

"This venue came up and we spoke about it over a few beers and just thought 'f*** it' let's give it a go," Chris said.

"There was no roof, there was four feet of water in the cellar, you could even tell from the outside that it was grim.

"Me and Brett sat down with the landlord and they were behind our vision. They've been really good with us.

"We're just hoping it can be somewhere that people can come and have a good time."
