Inside the maximum security prison where ex-cop Derek Chauvin is behind bars after George Floyd murder conviction

This is the maximum security prison where disgraced former police officer Derek Chauvin – who is being closely watched by guards – is adjusting to life behind bars.

The 45 year old arrived at the Minnesota Correctional Facility less than an hour after he was found guilty of murdering George Floyd.

There is high security around Chauvin who is considered a suicide risk and a potential target from fellow inmates due to his previous employment.

There is a camera in every cell at the facility and the footage is continuously monitored by corrections officers.

Guards also carry out rounds and check on cells no less than every 30 minutes.

The prison is listed as one of the safest for high-risk offenders as the facility has never had an escape, and only one previous murder.

Chauvin, who faces being caged for up to 75 years, will be held at Oak Park Heights wing of the facility until he is sentenced by Judge Peter Cahill.

Meanwhile, a mugshot photo of a glum and despondent Chauvin was released yesterday.

The image from the Minnesota Department of Corrections shows the former cop wearing a prison-issued orange jumpsuit.

A jury on Tuesday convicted the 45 year old of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter, with the verdict triggering cheers outside the Minneapolis courthouse.

Mr Floyd had desperately warned dozens of times he could not breathe as the officer knelt on his neck after he was arrested for allegedly using a fake $20 note at a grocery store last May.

His death in Minneapolis sparked a wave of Black Lives Matter protests around the world.

The disgraced cop faces a minimum of 12.5 years and a maximum of 40 years if he serves terms for each charge concurrently.

If served consecutively, Chauvin faces between 29 and 75 years.
