Inside the life of Line of Duty's Adrian Dunbar - from family life to hidden talents

Line of Duty has been Adrian Dunbar's home for the past six series as Superintendent Ted Hastings of AC-12.

Since the show premiered on BBC1 in 2012, that it’s hard to separate the man from the character.

From an uncertain beginning, the police drama series starring Dunbar, alongside co-stars Martin Compton and Vicky McClure, has reached fan and critical acclaim with BAFTA and IFTA nominations over the years.

But what is Dunbar really like away from the cameras?

For starters, Dunbar has seen success both in television and theatre, as an actor, director and screenwriter.

Dunbar co-wrote and starred in the 1991 film Hear My Song, nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the BAFTA awards, and has directed a well-received production of Philadelphia Here I Come!

Family life

In 1989, Dunbar married the Australian actress Anna Nygh after being set up on a blind date, by mutual friend and actor Joanne Whalley.

A celebrated actress herself, Anna starred in Capital City in the late 1980s and more recently in 3rd & Bird, as the voice of Mrs. Bilingsley, up to 2011.

Together, the couple have a daughter, Madeleine, along with step-son Ted, whom Anna shares with her partner from a previous relationship.

Originally born in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, the family live now live in the London area.

Dunbar told BBC Radio 4 in an interview that he didn’t know anyone else besides Anna who he “could have hooked up with who could have handled me.”

“I’ve got my woman and she’s a very good one. I wouldn’t let her down.”

Hidden talent

Fans of Superintendent were delightfully shocked in 2019 when Dunbar revealed his strong vocal range in a performance of ‘It’s a Wonderful World’ on the Late Late Show on RTÉ 1, where he was promoting the new season of Line of Duty.

Stemming from his days with his own band, Adie Dunbars and the Jonahs, Dunbar has toured across the UK and US giving performances, which fans were quick to admit they had witnessed first-hand when Dunbar appeared on the talk show.
