Inside the lavish Glasgow COP26 world leaders' reception that left locals locked out their own homes

Last night saw world leaders attend a lavish royal reception at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to mark the opening of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

It resulted in closures to a number of key roads in the west end, with a temporary 'ring of steel' erected around the historic landmark.

The event, hosted by Prince Charles on behalf of the Royal Family, caused controversy amid reports that locals were unable to access their own homes due to the security operation mounted in the area around museum and the SEC.

Several readers informed Glasgow Live that they were denied the chance to return home because of a huge police cordon - while claiming they were given no advance warning this would be the case.

One resident told us people are being denied access by police on Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street, which had officers placed along it for its full length in Finnieston to protect delegates and world leaders as they were ferried to the museum from the SEC.

The police cordon meant her parents were unable to get to vital medication in their home.

While another, a female NHS nurse, told us how she felt "incredibly vulnerable" after being told by police to take a huge detour in the cold and dark through an unlit Kelvingrove Park to enable her to get home after the end of a 12 hour shift at a city hospital.

She told Glasgow Live: "I felt incredible vulnerable walking around that late at night in the cold and dark, was so unsafe. Anything could of happened to me, especially in the park.

"It shouldn't take a kind stranger to escort me, a police officer should of done that or they should have ensured there was a high police presence in the park if they expected people to go that way at night.

"All so Boris and his pals could enjoy their tea at Kelvingrove."

Get Ready Glasgow, the official body responsible for communicating COP26 road closures to Glaswegians, gave advance notice of potential road closures in the area advising that pedestrian access would be maintained - with no reference to residents possibly being locked out their own homes.

The dinner was met by protestors from the likes of Extinction Rebellion, Glasgow Calls Out Polluters and Stop Cambo, who gathered in nearby streets and in Kelvingrove Park before and during the dinner.

Photos from inside the reception showed world leaders such as Joe Biden, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau mingle with Prince Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton and the Duchess of Cornwall in the main hall of Kelvingrove.

The event also saw Queen Elizabeth, who pulled out of attending COP26 following advice to rest, appear on a large screen to deliver a video message to attendees.
