Inside the inspired team talk before Newcastle United stunned Manchester United in style

Kevin Keegan told Newcastle United players they owed the supporters ahead of the Magpies' stunning 5-0 win against Manchester United in 1996.

It was a performance which marked the peak of the Entertainers' era as Keegan's side put the champions to the sword at St James' Park thanks to goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and, of course, Philippe Albert.

The result was all the sweeter for Newcastle fans after witnessing the Red Devils overhaul a 12-point deficit to win the title the previous season. They had also seen their side hammered by Manchester United at Wembley in the Charity Shield just a couple of months previously.

Recalling his favourite games as a player, Ferdinand unsurprisingly reflected on that unforgettable night - and revealed the simple instructions Keegan gave the players in the dressing room before a ball was even kicked.

"I always remember being in the changing room before the game and normally a manager comes in and does a big team talk about the team you're playing against and Kevin Keegan just came in and said, 'Look, you owe these supporters,'" Ferdinand told Sky Sports News.

"To a man, every single one of us knew what he was talking about and how we felt. Man United had pipped us to the title a year before and it was a case of giving something back to the supporters.

"They humiliated us in the Charity Shield before the season started and we just needed to give the supporters something back and on that day, we managed to do that."
