Inside the Halloween Pen - the 246-year-old Glasgow tunnel that will give you the heebie-jeebies

Glasgow has its fair share of creepy spots to visit that will give you the heebie-jeebies, whether it be a city cemetery in the dark of night or one of the city's many seemingly haunted buildings.

But nothing, and we mean absolutely nothing, will give you the fear like a visit to the Halloween Pen - the terrifying 246-year-old tunnel that makes Blair Witch feel like Bambi.

Located in the north of the city, the tunnel runs underneath the Forth and Clyde Canal between Lochburn Road and Ruchill Golf Course near to the Lambhill Railway Aqueduct.

It is understood to date back to 1775, and was built to allow drovers to walk their sheep and cattle under the canal between the areas of Hillend and Lochend when both areas were still rural.

Entered down a small embankment from the Lochburn Road side, at the entrance to the tunnel lies all manner of things that feel like mini warning signs for what lies ahead: glass bottles, old car engine parts and rubbish - while on the wall there's graffiti which reads 'End London Rule'.

Inside, it's pitch black, with passage through the tunnel complicated by ankle-deep mud and more car parts and rubbish for your feet to contend with.

What makes it so dark, and unusual and even scarier, is that the tunnel is actually dog-legged and bends in the middle, so you can't see from one end to the other while navigating your way through it amid the soundtrack of the echoing drips that seep through from the canal above.

A place where only the bravest or daftest of souls would dare to venture through, it had a bit of reputation with locals back in day. Apparently it was seen as a kind of rite of passage for youngsters to run through it and back on their own without being swallowed up by a monster.

The entrance to the Halloween Pen (Glasgow Live)

Walking through it from the Lochburn Road side takes you to the other entrance at Ruchill Golf Course. It's marked by big stone blocks, presumably to stop stolen cars from being driven in, with nature very much having taken over the golf course side with the ground thick with mud.

If you are looking for a thrill beyond that of an escape room or the like, then this might be just the thing you are looking for.

Otherwise, if you get scared easily, we'd recommend staying clear of paying visit, even if you had a torch as big as the Bat-Signal to guide you through it.
