Inside the FSG meeting that led to new Liverpool boardroom plan

There were celebrations on the pitch for Liverpool last weekend when Jurgen Klopp's side capped their excellent end-of-season form by qualifying for the Champions League.

But in the days leading up to the final-day win over Crystal Palace, which sealed third place in the Premier League table, there was reason to cheer off it, too.

It was announced on May 20 that the club's owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had agreed to have fan representation on the club's board of directors.

The new 'supporters board', which is to be established and written into the club's regulations, making it a legally-binding agreement, will be headed by the Spirit of Shankly (SOS) supporters' union.

The announcement came after SOS held a meeting with Liverpool 's chief executive officer Billy Hogan - which itself came after FSG were fiercely criticised for their part in the European Super League proposals.

The proposals, which would have seen the six-time European champions join 11 other clubs in a breakaway competition, fell apart following a huge fan backlash.

Liverpool withdrew from the competition and FSG principal owner John Henry issued a public apology.

But out of the bad comes good, with the proposed supporters board giving Liverpool fans real power when it comes to important decisions - like joining a European Super League - made by the club's mainly Boston-based owners.

Ian Byrne, the Labour MP for Liverpool, West Derby, and SOS member, was in the meeting with CEO Hogan that led to the formation of the new supporters board.

And speaking on the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast, he said: "We saw it (the meeting) as an opportunity to do what we always believed should have happened - which is a deal between SOS and the club.

"It felt like a real moment in time after the club acted like it did and John Henry acted like he did (after the European Super League collapse).

"The meetings were set up and I must pay due credit to everybody who has been involved with Spirit of Shankly since its inception - to get to that position was because of everybody's efforts over the last 12 years.

"The respect the club has got for Spirit of Shankly was there to see (in the meeting) and Joe Blott (SOS chair) did a magnificent job during the talks and negotiations.

"We were saying to the club, ‘you need to empower the football fans’. We can be an ally on and off the pitch but we need the trust. And most importantly we have to have the ability to stop an owner listening more to the likes of the Real Madrid chairman than the football supporters' trust chairman - that was the key thing.

"And from the deal we've negotiated, hopefully, it will give us that power."

The deal will be discussed and put to vote at a forthcoming SOS online meeting.

But if the proposals are passed it will see a representative of the new supporters board meet annually with the club's board of directors to consult on issues pertinent to Liverpool fans.

Also if an agreed consultation matter is to be discussed at a Liverpool FC board meeting, the chair of the supporters board will be present.

The supporters board will also have regular dialogue and input with the club's directorship based in the UK, where decisions that directly affect fans are made.

It all means that the new supporters board will have the power to say yes or no to matters like a breakaway European Super League and other important issues such as ticketing.

Asked by fellow SOS member Peter Hooton on the Allez Les Rouges podcast whether this was a chance for real change, Ian said: "I do - and I certainly wouldn't put it before the membership if I didn't.

"I think it puts us in a superb position. We have clear blue water from the (club) board but we also have it put into the articles of association that we can have a say.

"I think we're in a far better position than we were 10 weeks ago. We can only build on it and I think it's a wonderful opportunity. We've got something tangible, and as a fan activist, and as a member of Spirit of Shankly, I'm really happy with it."
