Inside the Edinburgh Chihuahua Cafe where customers can cuddle seven adorable dogs

Dogs and cake - is there any better combination of life’s simple pleasures?

At Edinburgh’s Chihuahua Cafe, seven bundles of fluff are on hand for cuddles, selfies and a good old game of fetch.

Through the hot pink doors on Frederick Street, guests can meet Lady Bee, Cleopatra, Elsa, Faery, Gatsby, Hepburn and the dog that inspired the whole venture, Ama.

Opened by Tanya Salitura in 2017, the business was brought to life when the dog lover wanted to share the support her pooch offered her with others.

She said: “Although this business is certainly about dogs, in particular Chihuahuas, at its very core, its heart, is just one best friend. Ama came into my life when I really needed her and she’s been by my side ever since.

“We’ve shared wonderful experiences together. Our first home as a real ‘family’, getting to compete in Crufts, moving to a new country; she was even my flower puppy at my wedding.

"But she’s also been there, pressed up against me, for all the lows, letting me cry into her fur and providing unspoken understanding and support.

"Because that’s what really true best friends are for.

“I’ve always had a special place in my heart for dogs but Ama showed me how special that bond really can be.

"I think it’s something everyone should get to share in and that’s why I am opening Edinburgh Chihuahua Cafe.

"It’s a joint venture with my best friend, allowing me to spend more time with her and giving the world an opportunity to share in the truest friendship you will ever have.”

The concept of animal cafes originated in Southeast Asia, and migrated over to the UK in the form of cat cafes.

Now others, like the Edinburgh Chihuahua Cafe, and the Dog and Scone in Newcastle, are starting to inspire other canine cafes in cities across the UK.

Tiktok user @jasmineizzy visited the cafe and posted a video to the social media platform, showing the free-roaming residents lapping up the attention from customers.

She said: “It’s £12 per person and it’s so worth it.”

Each of the chihuahuas can be seen wearing adorable outfits, from little jackets to diamante bandanas.

A spokesperson for the cafe added: “Our interactive animal experience allows you to take time to relax and indulge in some very rewarding company. Book a session and, once inside, our resident Chihuahuas will be roaming freely amongst guests for you to pet, cuddle, play with, take photos or simply observe and enjoy.”
