Inside the charred remains of the scrap yard devastated by a massive fire

The massive fire in a scrap yard yesterday reportedly began with just one vehicle's airbag going off.

Once that car had gone up in flames it is thought to have caused a domino effect - leading 100 cars to ignite.

And the owner of the scrap yard in Ammanford had to contend with a second blaze there this morning.

Richard Safadi, owner of Ammanford Metal Recycling Scrap Yard said: "Our staff were moving a car that had just come in with a fork truck, and the airbag deployed.

"It just went up in flames.

"We emptied the yard very quickly, moved all our machinery away.

"About 100 cars went up.

"The fire service ran out of water which slowed things down as well.

"Fortunately due to our quick action only one  piece of machinery was damaged and no-one was injured."

The fire reignited this morning, but luckily Mr Safadi had staff on watch to make sure they kept an eye open for any further incidents.

"Reignitions are common after a big fire like that," he added.

"There are lots of small pockets of heat so there can be flare ups after the main blaze is put out.

"We put staff out to keep an eye on it over night and they called the fire service again at about six this morning."

Despite claiming that the fire service took an hour to attend the incident, Mr Safadi said he was still grateful to the fire service.

He said: "I'd like to thank them and the emergency services for their help  and hard work over the last two days, they did a great job."

Shortly before 3pm yesterday, residents heard explosions yesterday, and black smoke clouded the sky at the recycling centre in Shands Road.

Fire crews from six stations were dispatched to the scene and remained on site for eight hours.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "On Tuesday, April 30 at 3.16pm, crews from Amman Valley, Llandeilo, Tumble, Pontardawe, Ammanford and Pontarddulais attended a fire at a scrap yard in Shands Road, Ammanford.

"Approximately 100 scrap cars and cylinders were fully involved in the fire and extinguished by firefighters using two ground monitors, two main jets, a high volume pump and water bowsers from Tumble and Kenfig Hill."

The spokesman added: "A JCB was utilised to turn over material, which allowed crews to access seats of fire, whilst a drone was utilised to monitor the smoke plume.

"The Fire Service left the incident at 11.33pm and returned the following day. May 1 at 6.05am to extinguish a reignition.

"The incident was declared closed at 10.41am. The cause of the fire was accidental."

Dyfed-Powys Police were also in attendance - with officers setting up cordons to make sure people were safe.

Local residents were also asked to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

In the meantime,  The Health and Safety Executive said it was aware of the incident and has been in initial contact with the fire service.

However, a spokesman said no formal decision on a HSE investigation has yet been made.

The scrap yard was open for business as normal today.
