Inside the Ayrshire 'jungle' house named one of the best homes in Scotland

An outlandish Ayrshire 'jungle' house has been hailed as one of Scotland's greatest homes, according to industry experts.

The Victorian Ayr villa was handed full marks out of 30 on the BBC Scotland TV show Scotland's Home of the Year.

The 1882 property won the west regional final and will now battle it out to win the top prize of being named the best in the country.

Owned by Annika and Ari, the first-time home owners moved into ground floor converted property just last year.

Judges, expert interior designer Anna Campbell-Jones, blogger Kate Spiers, and architect and lecturer Michael Angus were all impressed with the "exquisite" home.

Speaking on the show, Annika said: "When we started doing this house we kind of started off being very safe , then we just let it all loose.

"So it was 'let's paint it dark. Let's paint it black' and then just do things and make it fun; make it us."

Ari added: "It was the same with the furniture. like, we were obviously inclined to old furniture. Most furniture that we have is upcycled."

Originally owned by a wealthy Ayrshire lawyer and then converted into two apartments, the pair own the ground floor.

The property consists of wo bedrooms, family bathroom and kitchen. living room retains original period features and the garden has a gazebo with a pizza oven.

The home was noted for its lush green plants throughout and a unique take on the Victorian style.

Michael Angus said: "I always admire a Victorian architecture. I think there was inherent qualities that were always just marvellous.

"What was added to this was exquisite interpretation that retained the qualities of the original Victorian and gave it this very unique and magical twist."

The so-called jungle house went up against two other properties in the west region.

One of the other homes was also in Ayrshire and scored 24 out of 30.

The 1970s Mauchline home was originally a self-build and has been owned by Melanie since 2014.

Anna Campbell Jones said: "I thought it was a really, really brilliant collection of fabulous mid-century furniture.

"It was a great example of how you can really make your home unique, without having to spend loads and loads of money."
