Four weeks to save the planet? It’s fair to say that statement is a tad melodramatic.
Four weeks does, however, mark the time to pass before crucial climate talks begin in Paris aimed at limiting global warming to the 2C threshold. This is widely regarded scientifically as the limit of safety, beyond which many of the effects of climate change – floods, droughts, heatwaves, sea level rises and more intense storms – are likely to become much more dangerous.
Leading up to the 30 November COP21 UN climate change conference, the Guardian Weekly is shining a very bright light on all things environmental.
For four weeks, we will bring you four special editions of the newspaper, with four extra pages that are focused entirely on the environment.
In the edition just completed, our front page showcases the concerns of Pacific island leaders, who warn of possible disaster ahead. This cover story continues as part of our special report package inside.
We’ve also dedicated our deeper-read Review section in this edition to an array of environment-related reportage.
From fires in Indonesia to renewables in Argentina, soaring heat in the Gulf to drying rivers in Britain, and from advances in African agriculture to flower growing in America, I challenge you to find this scope and depth of environmental reporting in a newspaper anywhere.
We’re proud and pleased to bolster this coverage as the days count down to Paris.
In addition to extra environment coverage, we bring you two additional Culture pages, something we’ll do for the rest of November. (Extra pages in the news section mean extra pages in our features section!)
Partner paper Le Monde delves into music as the language of diplomacy. This is a fascinating read, which I do hope you’ll enjoy. We also consider how museums evolve.
And we’re pleased to provide a full page of Culture reviews, covering New York, London and cinema screens around the world. Think of this as an added bonus from our environment up-page.
We work hard here in London on range, tone and depth of coverage in the Weekly. With so much wonderful writing from the Guardian, Observer and our partner papers, it can sometimes be difficult to decide just what to highlight.
So it’s a delight to offer you more this month on subjects that I know (mostly because you’ve told me) are near and dear to your heart.
I welcome your feedback on the editorial content, which you can send to me by email via this link. As always, thanks for reading.
