Inside the 5 August edition

Usually we'd be expecting to struggle a little for news in this first week of August - the traditional news "silly season" when northern hemisphere daily papers are running a diet of photos of children splashing in fountains and speculative stories about exotic wild cats in the mountains.

That certainly wasn't the case this week, however, and it wasn't because the news was sunny. On the economics side, the down-to-the-wire US debt decision was certainly dominant, but there was also plenty of concern about the eurozone. We step back from the day-to-day to take a long look at Greece and its troubles, including a worrying account of its "silent" bank run.

There's also much to report from the Arab world, particularly Syria, where Guardian reporters say the start of Ramadan marked a "defining moment" of the uprising, with horrific bloodshed on the streets, particularly in the traditionally rebellious city of Hama.

You might need some light relief after that, and we offer a range of choices - whether it is adventurous and active animated heroines from Studio Ghibli in Japan, discussion of the art of camping, or an extensive exploration of a new theory of dog training. (Our production desk had great fun with the pictures for that.)

I hope that you enjoy the edition.

Quote of the week: "The children start school on August 22. I have to get school uniforms but I haven't got them yet. Will I be able to get them? I don't know." Mercedes Woodberry, 22, mother of twins, resident of Ward 8, Anascostia, Washington DC

Fact of the week: US Treasuries (bonds) account for 54% of the money invested in AAA sovereign debt.
