Inside the 4 February edition

As you might expect, the mighty protests in Egypt have a prominent place in this edition, both on the front page and inside. As well as reporting events, we go to Michael Tomasky, Guardian America editor, for reflections on why there's no thunder from Obama, and on to the streets of nightime Cairo, where law and order is now in the hands of the residents - sometimes it sounds positively medieval, with would be robbers repelled by boiling water and thrown rocks.

But there's also plenty of other news to report this week, perhaps most critically from Pakistan. Horrific figures have emerged on the rate of child malnutirition in Sindh, where the post-flood situation is being described as "a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions".

But there's good news from southern Sudan, which looks set to become the world's newest country on 9 July, after an overwhelming "yes" vote in the referendum and an astonishing degree of political calm. And we also go with our sister paper Le Monde to Peru, where a major national literacy drive is reporting good results.

Away from the news agenda, on the comment pages Kathryn Hughes reflects on some newly discovered letters by JD Salinger. Their quotidian ordinariness is not surprising, and it shouldn't be shocking she concludes - not everything a "Great " writes is great.

And in our books section we've a glowing review of A World on Fire, which looks at British involvement in the American civil war. Guardian Weekly staff make a great sacrifice every week in editing these pages - our "to read" lists grow enormously before we've finished them.

I hope that you enjoy this week's edition.

Quote of the week: "For the first time, I am proud to be an Egyptian." Susanne Saleh, a 38-year-old mother of three

Fact of the week: Pakistan is now thought to have the world's fifth-largest nuclear arsenal, ahead of India, France and Britain.
