Inside the 28 January edition

Is the Middle East peace process dead? That's the question brought into sharp focus after the Guardian obtained 1,600 or so confidential documents that lift the lid on negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The massive leak of secret papers shows that the Palestinians have offered major concessions to Israel, reveals that Palestinian leaders privately agreed to give up on refugees, and details how negotiators were prepared to accept Israel as a 'Jewish state'.

We devote several pages to this fast-paced and wide-ranging story, though you can find much more on the Guardian's website at guardian.co.uk/palestinepapers.

Elsewhere, we follow roving medics on the Thai-Burma border who face the same dangers as those they treat, explore the new-found political powers of Tunisians, and we revisit Sudan, where a referendum on southern secession has gone off without a hitch.

There's also a comprehensive package of analysis on China, reviewing last week's state visit to the US and considering what a spike in Sino growth means for global financial well-being.

Our main feature piece looks at Earth, population 7 billion. We'll hit that mark sometime this year, probably with the birth of a boy, and probably in India. Just how will the planet cope?

Science features the super-sized telescopes being built to probe deeper into space, books reviews the child-rearing methods of the Tiger Mother (be honest – who hasn't toyed, at some point, with setting the stuffed animals alight?), and Emma John is eloquent in our sports blog on the pros and cons of being the very best at trivia.

Quote of the week: "A lot still needs to be done in China in terms of human rights." – Chinese leader Hu Jintao going off-script a last week's US-China summit in Washington.

Fact of the week: Votes in southern Sudan to secede approached 99% in some southern states and diaspora communities in Egypt, Ethiopia and Kenya, initial findings indicate.
