Inside the 24 June edition

Women, some with power, and some without, play a prominent role in this week's edition. On page five, we get into coverage of the US Republican primaries with a profile of Michele Bachmann, a congresswoman who's caught the imagination of many on the right of the party (while also looking at the chances of Texas governor Rick Perry who isn't even in the race – not yet at least).

And on the comment pages the writer and philosopher Julia Kristeva, who is the chair of the Simone de Beauvoir prize for women's liberty, speaks up for some of China's leading women dissidents, while reflecting on the long and distinguished history of women's rights advocates in China.

But we also explore the place of some of the most disadvantaged, powerless women in the world, through a global survey looking at the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman - Afghanistan tops the list – and at claims that the West had an important role in encouraging sex-selective abortions, together with reports that the practice is spreading.

As you'd expect, we lead the paper with the Greek debt crisis, but we also take a look into some of the further corners of the European financial situation – from the peat collectors in Ireland who are refusing to give up their traditional work, to the 74-year-old man saved from eviction in Spain through the power of Twitter.

Away from the news agenda, the front of our review section should perhaps have a health warning - "may cause itching"; and you'll never look at Google in quite the same way again after reading the science page.

I hope that you enjoy this edition. If you'd like to keep up with us during the week, please follow us on Twitter, as do nearly 8,000 people around the world.

Fact of the week: Developing countries host 80% of the world's refugee population. Pakistan hosts 1.9 million people, with Iran and Syria second and third in the count.

Quote of the week: "We have no agenda and are just trying to do our best. We have no party members and no idea about spin... When we don't know something, we admit ignorance." Einar Orn Benediktsson, of the Best Party, which is now running Reykjavik
