Capturing a week in the life of the world, well, that’s easy. We do that all the time.
Our expanded holiday edition of the Guardian Weekly presented more of a challenge: sifting through a year, globally; distilling and decanting events; and, ultimately, assessing why they matter.
We’re fortunate to have tapped into the Guardian’s impressive network of foreign correspondents and the London newsroom’s international experts in helping us with this special year-end newspaper.
Weeks in the planning, our December double edition brings you 19 pages of bespoke content, covering every region and touching on the trends and themes that made 2014 a year that was truly to be reckoned with.
From Ebola to Islamic State, from climate change to China’s growing dominance, from emerging India to Europe’s travails, we’ve got the world this year fully covered.
Despite its many challenges, 2014 wasn’t all bad. Guardian columnist and leader writer Natalie Nougayrède finds some sources of optimism in a cover story penned exclusively for the Weekly’s pages.
Guardian Weekly deputy editor Graham Snowdon turns his hand to the year in Britain, nicely captured, if I do say so myself. On our sports pages, the ever-observant Barney Ronay wraps up highs and lows.
Beyond our special print Year in review section (with more stories to come online as the year concludes), we give up the back half of the Weekly to a deep, long read on the nature of hell (it cries out, really, for a piece reflecting on heaven!). We’ve doubled our science coverage in this edition on the Discovery pages, and similarly beefed up Culture, ensuring thoughtful, informative and entertaining reading that will amuse through the holiday break.
As ever, partner papers Le Monde and the Washington Post are represented. Is the pen mightier than the keyboard? It’s a question Le Monde writer Anne Chemin takes on in a thoughtful and (I thought) highly enjoyable read. The Post, meanwhile, considers kissing, and why it’s fun.
We’ve also brought you more of what you love elsewhere: a full page of reader profiles in a bigger Good to Meet You section, a page of Letter From contributions, which paint marvellous pictures of many places, and an expanded Notes & Queries offering.
This 64-page paper is our last before a festive break. The GW team will be back on the job just after Christmas, putting together your 2 January edition.
If you mark a holiday at this time of year, we hope it is restful and contented. We put the Weekly together for you, our long-time and loyal audience. Thank you for reading, and happy holidays.
