Inside Tanaiste Leo Varadkar’s personal life - from partner Matt Barrett to parents' one surprise

Leo Varadkar made history by becoming Ireland’s first openly gay Taoiseach back in 2017.

It's safe to say he's had an up-and-down time during his separate tenures as Taoiseach and Tanaiste since.

Unfortunately for the Tanaiste, public life is very difficult and he's been the subject to many negative headlines ever since news of Merriongate emerged last month.

But away from politics, what does the Tanaiste's home life look like?

The former doctor shares regular updates with his 198,000 followers and gives his fans an insight into his and partner Matthew Barrett’s life together.

The couple, who have been together since 2015, have recently moved into a luxury home after cardiologist Matt purchased the three-bedroom house on South Circular Road.

Matt reportedly paid €20,000 over the asking price of €900,000 for the stunning home.

Leo’s partner has managed to keep himself mostly out of the limelight, only appearing in newspapers on special occasions.

Matt revealed in a TG4 interview that he could speak fluent Irish as both his parents were primary school teachers and encouraged him to speak the language at home.

The fluent speaker has been helping Leo with his Irish since he became Taoiseach in 2017 and said they often speak Gaeilge while on holiday.

Elsewhere, Leo’s success in the world of politics came as no shock to his parents or family, although they never imagined the heights he would reach.

In an interview with the Irish Times, Leo's mother, Miriam, said: “I knew he’d be a leader. I knew he’d be something. I knew he would reach the top in whatever he chose, but a Taoiseach? No.”

The proud parents said they were surprised when Leo chose to join Fine Gael as Miriam came from a Fianna Fail family, and Leo's father Ashok voted Labour while he lived in the UK.

Miriam said: "Everyone adored him. He was adorable, a gorgeous baby, and then he went into Fine Gael. And that’s it.”

When asked if this was a surprise, she said: “Yes.”

Leo’s father had hoped he would follow his footsteps into medicine which he did for a while.

Ashok said: “And then he became a member of Fine Gael. Maybe he was revolting.”

The Tanasite’s family have a long history in politics, and from the age of 10, he began to develop a huge interest.

Leo’s father comes from a very political family in India.

His two eldest brothers were both involved in the freedom movement against the British; one of them was arrested and served a year in jail as a political prisoner.
