Inside story of Princess Beatrice's whirlwind engagement to Edo Mapelli Mozzi

Princess Beatrice's relationship with millionaire property developer boyfriend Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi has been a whirlwind romance.

The couple, who announced the exciting news of their engagement yesterday, have made the commitment after less than a year together.

They began dating in autumn 2018 but have been friends for years with sources saying their relationship moved very quickly.

Beatrice and Edoardo got engaged while away on holiday in Italy earlier this month, and plan to marry next year.

Photos released to announce the happy news show Beatrice's stunning new diamond ring - reportedly worth £100,000.

Edoardo, who is known as Edo and has a two-year-old son named Wolfie from a previous relationship, designed it in collaboration with the British jewellery designer Shaun Leane.⁣

In a statement announcing the engagement, the couple said yesterday: "We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement.

"We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can't wait to be married.

"We share so many similar interests and values and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness."

The engagement has put Beatrice next in line to be a royal step-mum, only the second senior royal to do so in modern history.

The other major royal to have taken a partner's children under her wing is Camilla Parker-Bowles.

Until six months ago Edoardo was living in London with his long-term partner Dara Huang.

The couple share two-year-old Christopher Woolf, who will become Princess Beatrice's step-son.

Dara's mum was very surprised when her daughter split from Edoardo and believes her daughter was also shocked when the relationship came to an end.

Despite the swift nature of their relationship, the princess has known Edoardo for years.

Their families are very close and the couple reportedly started dating in September , just a few weeks before her little sister Eugenie's Royal Wedding.

A royal source told the Daily Mail the Queen's granddaughter would never have been become involved with him if his former relationship hadn't come to a complete end.

They said: "She would never allow herself to break into another couple's happiness, especially if there was a small child."

Architect Dara, a successful businesswoman who has her own design company, hadn't told all her family about their split and her mother Lily didn't know about the separation until recently.

Beatrice had been single since 2016, when she split with long-term partner Dave Clark, who she had been with for a decade.

Beatrice and Edo's wedding will be the fourth royal one in recent years, following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's and then Eugenie's in 2018, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent's daughter Lady Gabriella Windsor's to Tom Kingston in 2019.
