Inside story of how Daniel James' transfer to Leeds collapsed before Man Utd move

Daniel James netted on an emotional Manchester United debut last weekend - but was one call away from playing in the Championship .

The 21-year-old came off the bench to score the fourth goal against Chelsea , dedicating the strike to his late father, who passed away shortly before his son's move to United was confirmed.

A new fly-on-the-wall documentary series titled ' Leeds United : Take Us Home', follows their first season under Marcelo Bielsa and was released on Amazon Prime today.

During the third episode called 'Spygate', James can be seen doing a medical with the Yorkshire club before posing with the shirt and signing a contract at the training ground ahead of a proposed move from Swansea City .

The saga unravelled during the January transfer window when the Swans blocked Leeds' last-ditch attempts to finalise the deal. As a result, James remained in Wales before joining United for an initial £15million in June.

James was supposed to be the final piece of the Leeds jigsaw - with the club having agreed a £7million fee for the player according to the Manchester Evening News .

Victor Orta, Leeds director of football and Angus Kinnear, managing director are seen in the documentary walking into the club's training ground while narrator, Russell Crowe explains that James looks the 'perfect fit' for Bielsa's high-intensity style of play.

Kinnear claims the club held 'positive' discussions with the Welshman while Orta says they are finalising the details and '80 per cent' confident of getting the deal over the line.

Everything appears to be going well as James passes the medical, makes his way to the training ground to sign a contract and starts to discuss house viewings.

Then, there is a problem - Swansea's American owner and their chief executive in Wales fail to agree the terms of James' move to Elland Road on deadline day.

The drama continues when James finishes signing his paperwork and the move lets set to be completed, but Orta brings proceedings to a halt and can be seen growing increasingly frustrated.

It becomes clear that Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins was not returning Orta's calls - Leeds cannot proceed and the deal falls through at the final hurdle.
