Inside RTE star Baz Ashmawy's home life - partner, six kids and becoming a grandad

RTE show DIY SOS returned to our tv screens last Sunday presented by Irish radio and television personality Baz Ashmawy who has had a long career in Irish broadcasting since the early 2000s.

The episode saw Baz and his building crew work together to build a home for Johnny Aylward and his family.

The RTE show has achieved great success, with the previous series bringing in more than half a million viewers each episode.

Before the pandemic, Baz branched out into stand-up taking his show Family Matters to the stages around Dublin.

Baz took over presenter duties from Nick Knowles to present the Irish version of DIY SOS.

Speaking on the episode in an Instagram post, Baz said: “Johnny, far from the final curtain. I just want to bow to you and let you know, that you're an amazing man.

”I knew nothing about motor neuron disease until I met you. It's the worst. You're an amazing husband and dad, dealt such an unfair hand.”

Baz has a long list of tv credits and is best known for the TV show 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy won the International Emmy Award for Best Non-Scripted Entertainment award.

The series was born after Ashmawy's mum and co-star Nancy, 72, announced that she wanted to do a skydive.

The series documented her typical Irish mammy reactions to the situations.

The series followed the pair take on wild tasks like skydiving and visiting prisons.

The first series was one of the most-watched programmes on Sky 1 in Ireland in 2014,

He has also done a bit of work on radio, and in July 2017, Ashmawy hosted his radio show That Baz Thing on RTÉ Radio One.

Is Baz married and does he have any children?

Baz was born in Libya in 1975 and is part Egyptian.

He moved to Ireland aged eight and grew up in Churchtown in Dublin

Baz is very private about his family life but occasionally attends showbiz red carpet events, launches with his partner Tanja and their children, and shares photos on social media of family day outs, such as Dublin Comic-Con.

Baz is engaged to his fiancee Tanja Evans, and the couple shares six children.

The couple met back in 2006 and got engaged in 2015.

Baz is stepfather to Charlotte, Harry, Jake and Amelia from Tanja's previous relationship.

They also welcomed two daughters of their own, Hanna, 12 and Mahy, 8.

Baz, aged 47, and Tanja became grandparents for the first time back in March 2021.

Speaking with the RTE guide, Baz said: "It is that cycle of family, isn't it? We are young for grandparents but it is really sweet to see Charlotte as a mum and doing so well with it. I am very proud of it."

He told the RTÉ Guide: "I had a bucket list of things I wanted to do, so sleeping with a granny wasn't on it originally but that box is ticked."
