Inside Queen and Donald Trump phone call - including 'special relationship' chat

The Queen and President Donald Trump chatted about coronavirus, birthdays and the UK and America's 'special relationship' in a phone call to mark Independence Day.

The Monarch rang the White House from Windsor Castle, where she is spending lockdown ahead of the July 4 celebrations.

During the chat, Trump wished the Queen a happy birthday for last month.

They also discussed the Covid-19 pandemic, talking about the "close co-operation on defeating the virus and reopening global economies", and how America and the UK will "stand together in our special relationship" during the crisis.

Trump has spoken often about his fondness of the Queen, once describing her as an "incredible lady".

He made a State Visit to the UK in June last year, during which he met the Queen and attended a banquet at Buckingham Palace.

Referencing the phone call, which happened on Tuesday, the White House said: "The president wished the Queen a happy birthday, marking 94 extraordinary years.

"The president also expressed his condolences for the British people who have lost their lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

"The president and the Queen discussed close co-operation on defeating the virus and reopening global economies.

"The president and the Queen also reaffirmed that the United States and United Kingdom stand together in our special relationship and will emerge from this trying time stronger than ever before."

The Queen's official Twitter account tweeted about the call, sharing a photo of their meeting last year.

They wrote: "Today, The Queen spoke to President Trump by telephone from Windsor Castle ahead of Independence Day in the United States on the 4th July.

"The telephone call is the latest in a series Her Majesty has held with world leaders in recent months, including President Macron, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prime Minister Scott Morrison."

Last year, Trump claimed the Queen had "the most fun she's had in 25 years" when he went to visit.

He made the claim on US breakfast show Fox & Friends Friday - and the bragging didn't stop there.

He said: "I have such a great relationship, and we were laughing and having fun. And her people said she hasn't had so much fun in 25 years.

"Now, then I got criticised for it because they said we were having too much fun."

He later heralded her as an “incredible lady” and claimed he also had a "great relationship" with Prince Charles, despite accidentally calling him the 'Prince of Whales' in a tweet.

"It doesn’t matter, but we have a great relationship and I had a great relationship with Charles, and honestly I have a very good relationship with a lot of the foreign leaders," he added.
