Inside Newcastle United's team bonding session at training ground ahead of Burnley fixture

Federico Fernandez organised a barbecue at Newcastle United's training ground to mark his birthday and bring players and staff together ahead of a huge game against Burnley at the weekend.

The centre-back turned 31 last week and arranged for Parrilla Gaucha UK to come to Benton after training on Tuesday to prepare an authentic asado (barbecue) featuring Argentinian beef, provoleta (cheese) and other delicacies from his homeland.

Newcastle's Spanish speakers have hosted a number of barbecues at their homes in recent years, which have helped to strengthen their bond off the field. Last season's crop were particularly close but Salomon Rondon , Ayoze Perez , Joselu , Mohamed Diame and Kenedy have since left the club.

In an effort to tap into the team spirit that has served this group so well, Fernandez wanted to gather everyone together as the Magpies look to end a run of just one win in nine league games against in-form Burnley on Saturday.

"Fede made it clear when he booked the event that he wanted everyone from the club to share in the day - from the management team and players to the kitchen staff and security guards and all in between - and everyone did," Nick Frangione, managing director of Parrilla Gaucha, told ChronicleLive.

"I would say it's a good way of getting everyone together. We've done lots of clubs now and there was a really nice atmosphere within there. They sometimes find it difficult to do that with the exposure they get. They can't just pop out and go for a meal - they have got a lot more things to consider.

"The weather was really kind to us. Fede sent a video the day before and there was snow on the ground and he said, 'Get prepared!' We brought fire pits up and tents and you know what? The day was wonderful. The sun was shining.

"They could have had it anywhere and we don't always do it at the training ground so he really wanted to share it with his team-mates and the club. I think that says a lot. It was that kind of bonding thing.

"Obviously, there's not masses amount to celebrate at the moment - I'm sure it will turn around - but it wasn't that sort of thing. It was a bonding thing. Hopefully it did a little bit to do that."
