Inside new 'super-local' Ouseburn hidden gem Ernie that first came to life in lockdown

The streets of Ouseburn welcomed a brand new addition during the January lockdown, an independent deli named Ernie.

Hidden beneath its 'older brother', popular bar and restaurant Ernest, Ernie showcases some of the best local produce in the region.

Following the lockdown last year, the owners of Ernest decided to open up space beneath their venue for essentials and take out food.

Eager to support the local economy and promote sustainable living, the unique store offers a variety of hand-picked whole foods, gifts, snacks, local beers and natural wines with a large portion of their stock sourced within 100 miles of the city.

And that's not all, you can pick up some delicious hot food, sandwiches, cakes and drinks from their serving hatch.

Kate Hodgkinson, one of the venue's directors, spoke when the plans were being submitted for the venue about how the store would focus on products from small local producers.

She said: “Ernie is a new shop, deli and take-out around the back of Ernest Café in the Ouseburn.

"We will sell hand-picked products with a focus on bringing you a useful, interesting shop that is as kind as possible to people and the planet whilst keeping a keen eye on affordability."

Of the 1,196 products stocked by the store 313 are described as "super-local", and will be sourced from within 20 miles.

A further 136 products are sourced from within 100 miles of the shop and 318 come from the UK.
