Inside 'most revolting hotel in the world' which guests say is stuff of nightmares

A hotel which has attracted scores of negative TripAdvisor reviews was described as the "most revolting hotel in the world" - but some say it does not deserve its terrible status.

Scores of guests who booked rooms at The Norfolk Hotel have complained about its cleanliness and decor, BirminghamLive reports.

Reviewers also posted on travel review website TripAdvisor to make their feelings known and described it as "the stuff of nightmares" and "the most revolting, stomach-turning hotel in the world".

The business has a 1.5 star rating on the site but out of 660 reviews, more than 480 were rated as "terrible"

However, there were some 'excellent' reviews - with one recent visitor describing it as a "splendid hotel".

Some reviewers have described it as "absolutely disgusting", a "vile place" and "definitely not what you expect for £90 a night".

In a review as recent as this month, Richard S said: "Absolutely disgusting. Not sure whether the staff have fallen out with their cleaning equipment if indeed they have any.

"Disgusting carpets and had to change rooms because of a large brown wet stain on the duvet cover that had followed through to the mattress cover.

"Got a new room, went in and there was another two large stains on my bed."

He added: "Gave up after that and just slept without any bed covers. Don't think these lot have a care in the world for the hygiene of this crack den, they've probably just given up."

Moira H in October said: "Arrived at this so called hotel and found pretty much the most dirty, disgusting and in general vile place. The lift doesn't work, as someone with disability issue this was not good.

In one Trip Advisor review, the room was described as 'disgusting' (Richard S/TripAdvisor WS)

"The staircase to the room smelt of stale fat and damp. The room was disgusting, one bath towel and one hand towel for two adults!

She added: "Curtains that we couldn't close as they were hanging off the rail, a fridge barely balancing on a unit beside the single bed, god forbid you had a child with you as they would have ended up under it, a bathroom window which didn't close, paint all over the floor of the bathroom.

"The shower......well..... the trickle was not any use to wash in (had to have a shower at sons house when we got there!!!), to have a cup of tea the kettle had to be plugged in under the desk and left on the floor, pillows were disgusting, didn't take clothes off to sleep as there was no way I was getting into the bed!

"Unfortunately, this was a very quickly booked trip, I didn't have time to look into things the way I normally would, but this so called hotel is the stuff of nightmares."

And Courtney M in August said: "Absolutely disgusting hotel very nice when walking in but as soon as you go to your room it's awful.

"The drains was blocked and the shower was way to hot or way too cold no in-between, the towels had foundation marks all over.

"Definitely not what u expect for £90 a night for what I paid!"

The Norfolk Hotel declined to comment when approached about the negative reviews by BirminghamLive.

Amongst the bad reviews there were also many 'excellent' and 'very good' reviews of the hotel on Tripadvisor (X00030)

Neb who posted his review last month, but visited last May, said: "Where do I start? The hotel is modern and up to scratch, very polite staff and a very comfortable room!"

Another positive review said: "After reading the reviews I'd been tempted to cancel my booking. I'm glad I didn't.

"I had a lovely clean room, 356, the most spacious single room I've stayed in. It's warm, comfortable and very quiet.

"The shower was really hot and the bathroom spotless! The staff were friendly and I would stay here again.

"I'd also be happy to stay here with my daughter.

" There were a few things that didn't overly concern me, but may be seen as criticisms by others, breakfast not included, WiFi not included, the Tv's aerial is a bit dodgy, and the shower curtain could do with replacing (it's worn not dirty).

"These 'issues ' didn't bother me so that's the reason I've still given 5 stars. This hotel, based on this room, does not deserve it's terrible status!"

While another added: "We stayed one night whilst watching the cricket. It was £35 per person.

"It was clean, a bit knackered and £35 - a bit like a single room in an officer’s mess. Perhaps not the place for a wedding anniversary blow out but perfect for a late night, early start.

"Our rooms were on the 4th floor - take an eye mask as the curtains aren’t great. Five stars for value for money. It was £35."
