Inside Michigan football's coronavirus shutdown: 'It just sucks'

Kwity Paye woke up Tuesday morning and prepared to go to class.

He turned on his laptop, logged into BlueJeans Network _ a video conferencing service _ and tuned in for his two-hour Swahili lecture.

This is Paye's new reality, as he and his Michigan football teammates deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

One week ago, the Wolverines were supposed to begin spring practice.

Now, the team is scattered across the country _ and no one knows when football will resume.

Like every other college football team, U-M had its spring practices canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. All classes, meanwhile, were moved online _ a significant adjustment for a university that had previously not offered online classes.

Most of the players who lived in the dorms have moved back home after reports emerged that a worker at the University's East Quad dining facility tested positive for coronavirus. Some players have stayed on campus and are taking online classes and trying to get through this as best as they can.

"I don't feel like we can be too productive in an environment like this," Paye told the Free Press. "Most of the gyms are closed. We've been having to do workouts on our own. That's beneficial but at the same time that's not the same feeling as going to a gym and actually getting a workout with a strength coach.

"I just feel like this environment has put a hold on everyone's living. It's not an ideal way of living. It's something we can try to get past as fast as we can, hopefully, when the weather starts to warm up the virus starts to go away a little faster. I've seen one thing where (President Donald) Trump said it could go up to August or something, and that would completely kill everything."
