Inside Manchester's enormous new halal steakhouse

A huge new steak restaurant opens its doors in Manchester today.

Ribeye Steakhouse is the latest food and drink operator to join the likes of Wood, Bunny Jackson's Juke Joint, and the Indian Tiffin Room down at the First Street development.

The restaurant has taken up a brand new unit close to HOME, a bright and modern dining space with towering windows facing out onto Medlock Street.

With 140 covers, it's one of the largest new openings to come to the city in the last year, and there are plans to add further seating for 40 more covers outside the restaurant later this summer.

It's been given a high-end and tasteful fit out, with a five metre tall wall of greenery at the far end and deep green leather chairs to match.

Tabletops and the bar are all built from solid white Arabescato marble (which had to be delivered using a special vehicle to accommodate the weight of the material).

Hanging low from the ceiling are large glass copper light fixtures by Tom Dixon, which look as though they are molten.

There's a mezzanine level situated above the open kitchen and bar, which will be available for hire for private dining events.

Also beneath the mezzanine is a small dining area that has been covered, wall and ceilings, in a golden bee-patterned wallpaper that Waquas is said is dedicated to the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing.

"We're born and bred Mancunians," said owner Waquas Kaushal. "We're very proud to be Mancunian and we just wanted to pay tribute in some way."

The restaurant, which is due to open to the public this evening following a handful of private dining events, is primarily a halal steakhouse with prime cuts of beef sourced from across the globe - though there are options for vegetarians and even vegans.

It has also signed up with Carbon Free Dining, pledging to make the site as sustainable as possible. Diners will have the option to donate for a tree to be planted in Africa.

Starters include barbecue chicken wings (£6.50), deep-fried 'dynamite' prawns (£10) and lobster fish cakes (£12), plus deep-fried halloumi and black truffle arancini for vegetarians.

Steaks make up the bulk of the main dishes - Creekstone, Wagyu and Aberdeen Angus cuts with prices ranging from £23 for a ribeye or sirloin Aberdeen Angus to £65 for a Wagyu fillet steak.

Steaks can be enhanced with beef bone marrow, garlic butter, and a choice of eight sauces.

Main dishes also include beef ribs (£17), burgers (£12-£13), tuna steak (£16.50) and marinated cauliflower steak (£13).

Desserts range in price from £4.50 to £8, with sweet treats such as pistachio profiteroles and spice chocolate mousse on offer.

There's no alcohol served at Ribeye, though the drinks menu of mocktails is still lengthy. All non-alcoholic cocktails are priced at £5, including a Manchester Bee-themed drink and a booze-free twist on an Old Fashioned.

Waquas said: "We have a non-alcoholic dry bar but it's still inspired by classic cocktails. We'll use almond syrup in place of ameretto, for example - you honestly won't be able to taste the difference.

"This is essentially two years in the making. It's quite a momentous day today, it's quite emotional.

"A lot of the businesses in this area have come over or reached out to us over email to say, 'We're really excited for you guys to open,' which is lovely.

"It's a great feeling to finally open the doors and be ready for business."
