Inside Leeds journalist Joanna Coles' life - and how her story inspired hit Netflix show The Bold Type

Leeds Journalist Joanna Cole's life and career inspired billion pound steaming serves Netflix to create a show all about her.

Joanna used to be editor-in-chief for Cosmopolitan magazine then she went on to win awards for journalism.

The Yorkshire born writer moved to the United States in 1997 to become bureau chief of The Guardian, and she later joined The Times.

Joanna star was born in Otley and attended Prince Henry's Grammar School before going off to University of East Anglia where she graduated with a degree in English and American Literature.

The journalist has worked for lots of other magazines which included being chief content officer for Hearst Magazines from 2016 however left in 2018 and announced the news on Instagram.

Joanna has openly spoken about her own experiences of being sexually harassed at work which heavily inspired the storyline for the Netflix show.

She previously shared one moment and said ‘I was arguing vehemently with a male colleague about the way we had handled a story and the guy just leant forward and kissed me on the lips. It happened twice.”

Joanna is now an advocate for women in media and the business world. She sits on the board of Women's Entrepreneurs New York City, an initiative to expand female entrepreneurship with a focus on underserved women and communities.

She went on to make TV appearances she was a mentor on Project Runway: All-Stars and executive produced the E! reality series So Cosmo.

As expected Joanna lived a very busy life moving from Leeds to America and becoming a Chief editor of well loved New York Magazine Cosmopolitan.

Which led to the show ‘The Bold Type’ being made. she previously spoke about how it came about and explained it was all after a stressful bad back in 2014.

She went for a meal with friends, the man sitting next to her asked what was wrong where she went on to explain everything without realising she was speaking to movie producer David Bernad who said her life sounded like a good TV show and later made it happen.

The Bold Type first launched in 2017 and already has four seasons. Former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine Joana serves as executive producer.

However, it only landed on Netflix at the beginning of March 2021 - and has already proved to be a hit.

The plot follows best friends Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens), Kat Edison (Aisha Dee), and Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) as they navigate their personal and professional lives in New York City.

The three women work for Scarlet, a fictional global women's magazine, spearheaded by its editor-in-chief, Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin).

Netflix users quickly become hooked on television series The Bold Type and claim it is like Sex And The City meets Gossip Girl.

Other series it has been likened to include Suits and Ugly Betty.

The show has even been nominated for three Teen Choice Awards, a Satellite Award, an Imagen Award, and a GLAAD Media Award.

Despite its success, it has been confirmed that The Bold Type will end with season five with US network Freeform releasing a statement about the show's conclusion.

The show's creator, Wendy Straker Hauser previously released a statement and said: "The Bold Type has been an incredible gift that has truly changed my life. I spent my twenties in New York City, working in magazines, so in many ways, the show feels very personal to my experiences.

"I have truly loved writing this show and living in this world. I will miss it terribly, but I am so grateful for the opportunity and glad to know it’s been a comfort to so many people out there."
