Inside lavish house with 'Sistine Chapel' library which has had price slashed by £20m

These spectacular photos capture the grand interior of a six-floor townhouse with a 'Sistine Chapel' library, which is now on the market for a whopping $88 million (£67million).

The luxurious mansion in Manhattan, New York City, was first put on sale for $114million (£87million) some six years ago.

But Vincent Viola, the Virtu Financial CEO who owns it, has been unable to find a millionaire buyer and has slashed the price.

New photos put on the estate agent Brown Harris Stevens' website show the lavish onyx-marble floors, grand entry hall and a Versailles-inspired dining room.

There's also a saltwater pool, a rotunda with 28-1/2-foot ceilings and a cinema.

The two-storey library has been likened to Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.

The property is the only 40-foot-wide house on the market in Manhattan with a fully-renovated 20,000-square-foot interior.

Paula DelNunzio, of Brown Harris Stevens, said: "The scale of the interior rooms is beyond belief and without compare, as there are four of the most remarkable rooms ever seen in a New York mansion."

She added the home's expansive kitchen comes complete with "almost every cooking appliance known to a chef".

The kitchen, a 40-ft wide room at the rear of the mansion, has French doors that open to Juliette balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The building was originally commissioned by an international silk trader in 1883.

Business mogul James Ellsworth hired architect William Welles Bosworth in 1913 to revamp the 19th century abode with its current neo-Classical style, according to the unit's listing.

Real estate agents nearly secured an $80million (£61million) sale with a Chinese buyer in December 2017 but the deal collapsed.

Vincent Viola, 62, founded Virtu Financial, Inc. in April 2008.

Virtu, one of the largest high-frequency trading and market making firms, has helped Viola acquire a current estimated net worth of $2.6billion (£2billion), according to Forbes.
