Inside Jonah Hill's weight loss transformation as star looks unrecognisable

Jonah Hill has undergone a huge weight loss transformation in recent years and now looks totally unrecognisable over 40lbs lighter.

The 21 Jump Street star was recently spotted running errands in Malibu after his epic weight loss, showcasing his slimmed down physique and huge beard.

The Hollywood actor has previously opened up about his body image struggles as he confessed how difficult it was for him growing up in Hollywood as an overweight teenager.

Although it may seem like the 39-year-old shed the pounds over a quick period of time, Jonah's weight has massively fluctuated over years as the actor has fought hard to get in shape since he was in his twenties.

Jonah, who rose to fame after his breakout role in the teen comedy Superbad (2007), has endured over a decade-long weight loss battle after he first attempted to shift some body weight in 2011.

The star, who now sports a huge beard, previously told fans in an emotional Instagram post he 'finally loves and accepts' himself.

Here we take a closer look at Jonah's weight loss and mental health struggles over the years.

Weight loss journey

The Wolf of Wall Street star has been very open and honest about his own battles with self confidence and body image in recent years.

After starting his weight loss journey in 2011, the actor managed to shed around two and a half stone before he piled it all back on again for his role in the 2016 comedy crime film Wardogs in 2016.

However, Jonah was determined to get back in shape again and impressed the world after he managed to lose over three stone again the following year.

Hill, who is close pals with his 21 and 22 Jump Street co-star hunk Channing Tatum, previously revealed on the The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon how he turned to his pal for advice.

He said: "I called Channing [Tatum] and said: 'Hey, if I eat less and go to a trainer, will I get in better shape?'

"And he said: 'Yes you dumb motherf*****, of course you will, it's the simplest thing in the entire world.'"

Jonah also told Fallon that he tracked all of his food that he sent to his nutritionist to help keep him on top of what he was consuming.

Hill insists that he lost all the good old fashioned way - through a healthier diet and increased movement.

Jonah previously told ABC News: "I wish there was some crazy thing that I did, like a pill or a genie or something, but I went to see a nutritionist, and he told me what to eat and to change my habits and stuff".

The actor added that one type of food he particularly enjoyed and found he lost weight eating was Japanese cuisine.

He also revealed that drinking beer was a major setback for him and found that he was noticeably thinner after he gave it up.

Jonah has now managed to keep in shape since 2017 and was recently spotted in Malibu looking healthier than ever.

Mental health battles

The Wolf of Wall Street star has been very open and honest about his own battles with self confidence and body image in recent years.

Discussing the mental challenges of growing up in the spotlight while being over weight on the Ellen Degeneres Show, Jonah said he used to be called "fat and gross and unattractive" in the early stages of his career.

The actor recalled not realising how big of an impact it had on his perception of his own worth until he grew up, adding: “I’m under construction like we all are, you know what I mean? We’re all just trying to figure it out.”

Rare shirtless pictures of the 39-year-old surfaced online in February 2021 which led Jonah to take to Instagram to address the images.

In a heartfelt post, the comedy star confessed to his followers that he had never taken his top off in the pool in front of his friends and family before he reached his thirties due to his extreme lack of self confidence.

The post read: “I don’t think I ever took my shirt off in a pool until I was in my mid 30s even in front of family and friends. Probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren’t exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviewers.

“So the idea that the media tries to play me by stalking me while surfing and printing photos like this and it can’t phase me anymore is dope. I’m 37 and finally love and accept myself.

"This isn’t a ‘good for me’ post. And it’s definitely not a ‘feel bad for me post.’ It’s for the kids who don’t take their shirt off at the pool. Have fun. You’re wonderful and awesome and perfect. All my love.”

Netflix documentary

Jonah released his moving mental health Netflix documentary 'Stutz' last year which was centred around difficult conversations about his early life experiences during live therapy sessions with his celebrity therapist Phil Stutz.

Within the black and white documentary, Jonah reiterates how damaging the media had been for him as a teen and how they fuelled "negative feelings" about himself despite all of his success.

The star who previously said being obese as a kid "f****d me up" explained: "When I was a kid, exercise and diet was framed to me as like, 'There's something wrong with how you look'.

"But never once was exercise and diet propositioned to me in terms of mental health. I just wish that was presented to people differently."

Jonah revealed he decided to make Stutz in order for his therapist to be able to first hand share the "therapy and tools" he has used to help the star, to as many other people as possible.

Much of the unique film links back into Stutz' personal life and how he himself created the tools he now teaches his clients in order to cope with traumatic life events.

Speaking of why he first started seeing Stutz in his early thirties and the work they do together, Jonah said: “I had an incredible amount of success.

"But inherently, at my core, I’m still this unlovable person. The work is inching towards not only accepting that it’s great to be this person, but that’s still very hard.”

Fans have since praised the brave actor for his complete honesty during the short film with some dubbing the documentary as a "life changing" watch.

Another applauded Stutz whose Parkinson's diagnosis was also revealed in the documentary for his teaching methods.

They wrote on Twitter: “I learned more about mental health in 90 minutes than I did with six years of reading self help books and going to various therapists”.

Stutz was released on November 4 2022 and is currently available to stream on Netflix.
