Inside Ianis Hagi's Rangers transfer negotiations and how Ross Wilson 'reduced' winger's fee

Rangers were able to sign Ianis Hagi for a reduced fee of £3.3million, according to reports.

The Romanian winger has officially signed a permanent deal from Genk after a successful loan spell during the second half of last season.

The Light Blues had an exclusive option to make the move long term after agreeing an initial fee of £4.5m in January.

But The Athletic claim that Rangers were able to whittle the price down after successful negotiations between sporting director Ross Wilson and Genk chief Dimitri de Conde.

The same report states Rangers will pay £1m up front with the remaining £2.3m paid in installments. The Belgian side have inserted a "standard" sell on clause.

Wilson revealed the financial uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic meant the Ibrox club were able to lower the original £4.5m price.

He said: "The formality of the transfer won’t complete until the transfer window opens but we look forward to welcoming Ianis back to Glasgow in the next few weeks alongside the rest of the first team squad. Finally, I thank Genk for their openness, flexibility and creativity in all of our discussions.

“We secured an exclusive option in January and in recent weeks we have worked with Genk to find a new solution that works for everyone now, given how much the world has changed in the last few months.”

Hagi admitted he turned down offers from several other clubs and that Rangers remained his "priority" throughout the process.

He told Rangers website: “I am excited about re-joining the squad for pre-season and putting on the famous shirt once again. There was interest from other clubs, but my priority was always to return to Glasgow and play for Rangers.

“I really enjoyed my loan spell at Ibrox and look forward to playing in front of our fans very soon, but for now I hope all of the Rangers fans and your families are staying safe and well.”
