Inside historic sandstone cottage plucked from a period drama

A historic home in the sought after Wirral suburb of Caldy has gone on the market.

Known as the smithy, the dwelling on Croft Drive is understood to have once been a blacksmith's workshop, or forge. According to its listing, the "delightful" cottage is located near Caldy Church, has a "deceptively spacious interior abundant with original features" such as beamed ceilings and latched doors.

It also boasts a striking amount of bare stone on its interior walls, from the kitchen to the bedrooms and bathroom, adding to its historic feel.

The three-bedroom, one bathroom, property is on the market with Bradshaw, Farnham & Lea for £895,000. The road is a prestigious location in Caldy, with properties in the last ten years selling upwards of £500,000.

According to The Caldy Society, the village started life as a prosperous agricultural estate, although the building of houses on farm land did not start until the early 20th century. The Barton family acquired the estate in 1836, when it consisted of a hamlet of farms and cottages, some of which had been built in the 17th century. Caldy Church was built as a school for the children of the estate in 1868.

The estate changed hands again in 1905 and was purchased by Caldy Manor Estate Co, which laid out the roads including Croft Drive, and sold off the large building lots, retaining control over the design of houses when they were built.
