Inside Gareth Southgate's Press conference in the North East as England leave region

England boss Gareth Southgate conducted his Press conference at the same time Graeme Jones oversaw a full scale training session at the Riverside.

Just moments after England players had applauded fans with World in Motion blasting around the stadium, Jones and other coaches emerged with the cones and goalposts on wheels to set up a small practice match.

The session took place in full glare of the media as many of the England stars who hadn't featured were put through their paces.

Here's what was discussed while players started the preparations for the Croatia game in Group D next weekend at Wembley.

James Ward-Prowse's unfortunate and controversial omission

The Southampton star was probably man of the match against Romania as he delivered a number of telling balls into the box.

His set-piece knowhow can surely only benefit the Three Lions at Euro 2020, but it has now been confirmed that he misses out with Ben White of Brighton taking the final place in the squad.

Southgate was quizzed about Ward-Prowse afterwards and said: "James’ professionalism and approach all this week, given the disappointment of having been left out, have been absolutely first class.

"The decision won’t necessarily be about the performances today, it might be about where I feel I need the most cover because I couldn’t be happier with the way the players who were left out approached things."

The boos as England players took the knee were impossible to ignore - but perhaps inevitable

Players took the knee to show their support for racial equality but the boos rang out from around the Riverside.

The majority of fans then attempted to drown out the boss with applause but radio commentators could hear them loud and clear.

Southgate said: "Sadly, I think I expected what happened to happen.

"We’ve accepted that as a group. It’s not going to stop what we’re doing and what we believe.

"We’re going to have to live with that."

The penalty squabble that had people talking after the game - but Southgate issues warning

Jordan Henderson took the ball off Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the second half before stepping up to miss the spot-kick to leave England hanging on at 1-0.

The midfielder pulled rank on the Everton star to leave Southgate far from happy.

He quipped afterwards: "We had Marcus Rashford on penalties then James Ward-Prowse but both came off," Southgate told ITV.

"We expected Dominic Calvert-Lewin to take it and I was expecting Hendo to go over to him and let him take it. We will pull rank next time."

Southgate's nod to France 98 as he hints some big names may start Croatia game on the bench

The England boss has so many decisions to make before the Wembley opener on Sunday.

Jack Grealish's performance suggests he should start the game against the World Cup finalists of 2018 while there is stiff competition in the heart of defence.

But Southgate said: "Players who start game one, there’ll be changes during the game.

"I was talking just now about 1998 (in the World Cup in France), and David Beckham didn’t start the first game.

"Michael Owen didn’t. But by the end of the tournament, Michael Owen was a superstar.

"Those changes happen."
