Inside Dillian Whyte's lockdown training camp in Portugal after 40 hour drive from London

Dillian Whyte drove 40 hours to Portugal for a week-long training camp - but is still there more than a month later.

The heavyweight planned a short stay to help him prepare for his forthcoming fight against Alexander Povetkin.

But when London locked down and his fight was moved from May to July, Whyte opted to stay put.

"I was only planning to do a week or so to start training before the fight," he told Mirror Fighting . "I drove because I had to take my dogs with me and I don't like putting them in transport.

"It took me 40 hours because I had to stop to let them out every two hours but they travelled well, it was the longest journey they've done.

"We drove to France, through Spain and all the way up. I didn't really eat anything, I just drove and had 10 energy drinks."

As well as his giant dogs Hades and Zeus, Whyte has been joined in Portugal by most of his training team.

As a result, he will be more prepared than most for when boxing resumes, possibly with his clash against Povetkin on July 4.

"I have my team here and we've got our own private gym; we have places to run in, train in and the boxing gym and weights are in the same place," he added.

"I don't have a private gym in London; I'm in the process of building my own but I didn't have the chance to get it done in time and kept putting it off. Thankfully I had a little rabbit hole here to run into.

"My head coach is not here but my second coach is, my physio is here and so is my strength and conditioning guy so it's all good."

Boxing is likely to return in a studio behind closed doors with no fans in attendance - a far cry from the thousands who would have crammed into the Manchester Arena to see Whyte's next assignment.

But he said: "Ideally I'd like to wait to have a crowd but people need entertainment and a lot of people count on sport so I'd like to get out twice and give people some entertainment.

"I'd fight behind closed doors, it's better with an atmosphere but I'm a fighter by nature so I don't mind where the fight is.

"At the minute the fight is set for July 4 but let's see what happens, we don't know what the government is going to say.

"There are serious things happening in the world so we'll have to see; it's out of our control and we have to listen to the government and take their advice."
