Vera Lynn's incredible love life and family as she dies aged 103

Dame Vera Lynn has died at the age of 103, her family has confirmed.

The singer - who became known as the Forces' Sweetheart during World War Two - leaves behind one daughter, Virginia Lewis-Jones.

Virginia, now 74, was her only child with her late husband Harry Lewis, who she married in 1941.

Vera and Harry were together until his death in 1998.

She met Harry in 1939 when he joined Bert Ambrose's eponymous orchestra, with which she performed.

Vera said Harry was "terribly good looking, with a fine head of hair, even if he was rather short".

Harry, a clarinetist and saxophonist, and eight other members of the Ambrose orchestra joined the RAF at the start of the war and soon formed a new orchestra, The Squadronaires.

The Squadronaires toured the UK and Vera would often sing with them.

After the war Harry worked as Vera's manager and toured with her around the world.

Speaking only last year, Vera revealed she drifted off to sleep every night dreaming of her late husband.

She said "I still miss him, even after all these years."

The singer also opened up about her memories of her "simple wedding" to the musician.

Vera said: "I look around at all the mementoes of my life dotted around the room; the pictures of my late husband, Harry - and it all comes flooding back.

"I remember our simple, 1941, wartime wedding, the way my lipstick ran in the tropical heat."

Their daughter Virginia was born at the height of Vera's fame in 1946, a year after the war ended.

The family settled in Finchley in North London.

Veras said she only had one child so she could carry on working.

She told The Guardian : "I didn't have any more children because I couldn't have continued working – and I was the main breadwinner.

"But although we are small in number, family life has always been hugely important to me."

When she grew up Virginia accompanied her mother on tour as her dresser.

Virigina later worked a variety of different jobs, including as a researcher for the BBC, a stint at Warner Bros records in the US and at a fashion house.

Later she trained as a complementary therapist in reflexology and holistic massage with aromatherapy, and ran her own business.

In recent years Virginia worked as her mum's agent and as the vice-president of the Dame Vera Lynn Children's Charity.

Virginia has a step-daughter and three grandchildren.

She and her mum were always close and lived next door to each other in Ditchling in East Sussex for years.

And more recently they were living in the same building, with Vera living on the ground floor and Virginia and her husband Tom upstairs.

Virginia recently told the Daily Mail: "Like most mothers and daughters, we have little spats, but we have very similar personalities, which is why we get on so well.

"We like the same things and have the same interests."
