Inside Central Station at 'rush hour' after Boris Johnson urges the public to return to work

Central Station was deserted during rush hour after Boris Johnson urged Brits to get back to work.

The Prime Minister "actively encouraged" millions of people to return to their jobs and kickstart the next stage of the plan on coronavirus.

He made the announcement on Sunday night, as he unveiled the Government's 'roadmap' out of lockdown.

However come Tuesday morning, the Newcastle train station - usually packed during peak times - was almost empty.

Despite plenty of trains, just a handful of passengers were waiting on platforms, in stark contrast to scenes in cities like London.

Pictures emerged on social media of London Underground crammed full of commuters as workers started returning to their jobs from Monday morning.

The Government has urged those who can't work from home to return to their jobs. However, it has also warned the public to avoid public transport if possible, and instead cycle, walk or drive.

The changes are set to come in from Wednesday.

However, in his address, the PM said: “We now need to stress that anyone who can’t work from home, for instance those in construction or manufacturing, should be actively encouraged to go to work.”

"We want it to be safe for you to get to work so you should avoid public transport if at all possible – because we must and will maintain social distancing, and capacity will therefore be limited.”
