Inside Britain's best sheds including bra HQ, priest's chapel, snug bar and castle

A lingerie model, a bra saleswoman, an archaeologist and a Catholic priest are among the finalists battling it out to win a competition to find Britain's best shed.

From cosy garden snugs to train carriage transformations - these self-confessed shed-heads have all made it to the final of this year’s Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition.

A record-breaking 331 hopefuls vying for glory entered the 15th annual ‘shed-to-shed’ challenge - with lockdown producing some of the most whacky entries yet.

Catholic Priest Father Len Black, 72, submitted his own summerhouse where he has held Holy Mass since 2011.

Throughout lockdown, the shed, in Inverness, Scotland, has served as a beacon of comfort as Father Len Black streamed his services across the globe - attracting viewers from as far away as Australia.

Highland priest Fr Black has been streaming his masses live from The Oratory Of St Joseph summerhouse in Inverness via Zoom several times a week.

Fr Black, who is pastor to the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham in Scotland, said he had been determined not to let lockdown restrictions come between people and their faith.

The tech-savvy Catholic priest said: "I found that using Zoom to broadcast my masses is very valuable, especially for people who are isolated on their own.

"It's created an opportunity to feel part of the church despite the fact that we are all in lockdown.

"There's the spiritual side that people are getting the nourishment of the mass albeit in a peculiar way through zoom.

"And there's also the social side of it that's important for people's morale, just to feel that we've at least got these friends that we can meet up with a couple of times a week."

Former Navy veteran Nicholas Pointing from Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, also submitted his creation of a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang-inspired shed, hoping he can chug away with first prize in the competition’s workshop/studio category.

Meanwhile Alex Reynolds designed The Snug - a cosy pub in the garden of his Consett, Co. Durham, home.

This year’s competition featured an added ‘lockdown’ category, with entrants including Mark Campbell’s wooden ‘Winterwood’ castle - nestled in the bluebells of his Wingerworth garden in Derbyshire.

Kieran Bentham, of Otley, also entered his cabin into the mix, hoping to scoop first prize in the summerhouse category - competing with Joanna van Blommestein for her shed, The Bra Boss in Faversham, Kent, where she runs her own lingerie boutique.

Head judge and competition founder Andrew Wilcox said: “The past year has been an incredibly challenging time for all of us and, now more than ever, we’re aware of how important the humble shed can be.

“Sheds are not just unloved, brown structures at the bottom of the garden that house tools and household junk, they are vital spaces where you can go to relax, work on a project or burn off some steam.

“The high-calibre entries this year really prove why we set up the competition in the first place - to highlight the valuable role sheds can play in our lives, in our businesses and the positive impact they have on our wellbeing.”

A total of 22 finalists have now been chosen, with public voting closing on Monday, July 12.

Instagram influencer and model Danielle Zarb-Cousin created a chic 'shag pad' shed bar to get over a bad break-up.

Danielle, 29, was in need of a stiff drink after she was unceremoniously dumped by her fiancé, Love Island star Jonny Mitchell.

She announced the "traumatising" split to her 30,000 Instagram followers by sharing a video of herself in a wedding dress in December 2019.

The following summer, Danielle threw herself into creating 70s-inspired Creme de Menthe bar from the empty shed in her parents' garden in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

And now she has been recognised for her renovation skills by becoming a finalist in the annual contest Cuprinol Shed of the Year 2021.

She said: "My shed really helped to get over my split. I had nothing else to do.

"The last thing you want after a break-up is not to see anyone and to be on your own.

"I couldn't go out and see my friends or start dating again, so the shed became a massive focus for me during lockdown.

"The shed was brown, unused and empty and my parents were going to knock it down.

"But I thought it was a perfectly good shed and I was bored during lockdown, so I thought I would do something with it.

"It is now very colourful, bright and cheerful.

"I painted everything myself inside and outside, including the orange beams and bar itself.

"Everything in the shed was sourced from charity shops and second hard vintage furniture shops when they were open between lockdowns.

"My mum found me vintage records and everything built up over time."

Danielle shared a picture of herself painting the shed sporting a sizzling black swimsuit and clutching a large glass of white wine.

The model has since shown off her curves regularly while posing in bikinis in front of her garden sanctuary.

But lockdown has prevented her having any wild shed parties - for now.

She said: "I have been blogging from the shed. It is a really nice environment to write from.

"I'm looking forward to having some parties after lockdown eases as all everyone wants to talk about now is my shed."

Placed in the Pub/Entertainment category, her shed is one of the 22 finalists that now go to a public vote and then before judges to pick an overall winner.

She said: "One of my friends said I should enter and I thought it was a joke. I had to Google it to see that the competition was a thing.

In the pub/enterainment category, Alex Reynolds has entered The Snug, in Consett, Co. Durham (PA)

"I never expected to make the final but now I have been looking at all the other entries and they are all so creative and uniquely different."

Danielle's rivals for the title include specialist bra-fitter Joanna, 33, who built the lingerie boutique Bra Boss in Faversham, Kent

The former Gossard sales manager had only just started her own business in her charming converted summerhouse when the nation into lockdown.

She said: "When I was a rep, I would always say that things would go full circle and people would go back to more of the independent stores again.

"I think the lockdown has shown people how lovely it is to shop and support local and that online shopping can be quite boring - and more importantly you shouldn't just buy your bras online without trying them on."

And in the Nature's Haven category, archaeologist Rebecca Roseff built a medieval-inspired shelter - called Batbarn - in Colwall, Herefordshire, to support rare horseshoe bat colonies for their summer roosts.

Another shed is a replica castle.

Organisers said that staging the 15th annual Cuprinol Shed of the Year contest during the pandemic has highlighted the health benefits of having a garden retreat.
