Inside Bristol Airport's new £5million fire station

Bristol Airport has built a £5million fire station next to the runway to house its six huge fire trucks.

The fire crew, which are employed directly by the airport, will be based at the new site.

Bristol Airport has never had any major fires but there have been car fires at the airport in the past.

The airport's team of firefighters manage incidents where planes land with hot wheels as well as dealing with weather problems.

They are also trained as first aiders and paramedics so can help with safety issues.

The building was designed by technical and electrical engineering consultancy McCann and Partners, which are also designing the airport's new immigration hall and airline building.

Jeff Price, mechanical director at McCann and Partners, said: “Bristol Airport is going through such an exciting period of growth at the moment and we are delighted to have been involved in its expansion over the past few years."

The new low-carbon fire station is the latest in a series of developments taking place at Bristol Airport.

Bristol Airport is currently planning a huge expansion that will allow the site to increase the amount of travellers to 12 million a year. It is currently allowed 10 million.

The plans, which have been submitted to North Somerset Council, include the building of a pedestrian walkway at the front of the building, more parking space and changes to the road layout on the site.
