Inside Bridgend's new live venue 'Luna Live Lounge'

A new live venue has opened in Bridgend which hopes to revive the town's nightlife.

Luna Live Lounge, located on Derwen Road, Bridgend, hopes to bring a new lease of life to an evening in Bridgend.

The venue, formerly occupied by nightclub Sax, has been transformed under new ownership.

Co-owned by Russell Keeble and Chris Murphy, the two veterans of the hospitality scene have revamped the former club for gigs, club nights, drag nights, comedy nights and much more.

"We're up for anything," said owner Chris, "We've put a lot into redoing the venue, the floors have been levelled, the bar has been moved and the stage is new, we've made a feature wall for photos."

The new venue has been adapted with an extendable stage and dancefloor to suit a wide variety of events. The step-free access also makes it accessible for everyone.

"We've levelled out everything so it's safer, there's no climbing up to the old podium."

Both Chris and Russell took the gamble of opening the new business during Covid having started the project in September.

"The biggest problem we've had is knowing where we can open and not, if there's a further restriction then there's nothing we can do about it, but we're hopeful we can tailor to Christmas parties and things.

"We want the venue to cater for everyone in Bridgend, not just younger people which is sometimes the case with live venues."

The owners also teased some Welsh heroes visiting the Luna Live Lounge along the way. Russell explained: "We're looking at some quite big names to bring down soon, not stadium fillers obviously, but ones with big followings, so people aren't having to go into Cardiff all the time.

"We just want to bring that atmosphere back here, there used to be loads going on, the Recreation Centre used to put these nights on, and the town hall as well."

The owners also highlighted that their other hospitality venues, such as The Phoenix, have been awarded a gold standard for covid safety from Covronavirus inspections, and the new venue has been established with those restrictions in mind.

"We want it to be a safe and friendly environment," Chris explained.

A sheltered outdoor area has also been built to keep punters safe from the busy road outside.

The owners hope that, should their live nights be a hit, that they can expand into the other rooms at the venue to cater to a wider audience.

"Watch this space," Chris added.
