Inside Aaron Carter's family - from restraining orders to his sister's tragic death

Aaron Carter was found dead at his home in California earlier today, following a turbulent and often tragic family life.

The rapper, whose brother is Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter, was just 34 years old when his body was discovered after police officers received a 911 call at 11am, his representatives have confirmed.

Throughout his life, Aaron had a tumultuous relationship with his siblings and many of their arguments were aired on social media.

Back in 2019, 42-year-old Nick took to Twitter to announce that he and his sister Angel Carter had filed a restraining order against Aaron, claiming he had threatened to kill Nick's pregnant wife and unborn child.

"After careful consideration, my sister Angel and I regret that we were required to seek a restraining order against our brother Aaron today," Nick wrote.

Nick said he and his sister made the decision due to Aaron's "increasingly alarming behaviour".

He added: "We were left with no choice, but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family."

The star said he still loved Aaron and expressed his hope that Aaron would get help.

Aaron reacted to the restraining order on Twitter, writing: "So my brother just got a restraining order against me."

"Take care. @NickCarter we're done for life. I haven't seen him in four years. And I don't intend to," he added.

Aaron explained: "I am astounded at the accusations being made against me and I do not wish harm to anyone, especially my family."

In the same year, Aaron made allegations of sexual abuse against his sister Leslie, who had died of a drug overdose in 2012.

He alleged the abuse began when he was 10 and ended when he was 13. Aaron claimed it would occur when Leslie failed to take her prescribed medication for her bipolar disorder.

No public comments from the Carter family denying or confirming these allegations have been made.

Leslie was a 25-year-old mum-of-one when she was found unresponsive in her father's home in New York on January 31, 2012.

She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival at 4:59 p.m.

It was later revealed that Leslie suffered an overdose and she was found taking prescription medications Olanzapine, Cyclobenzaprine and Alprazolam.

The news was especially heart-breaking for Aaron, who just days before had offered to pay for her substance abuse treatment.

"I got $10,000 the week before Leslie died, and I actually had reached out to her two weeks before that and said, 'I'm going to get you the money to go to rehab',

"She wanted it," Aaron said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Brother Nick did not attend Leslie's funeral due to the feuding family.

Aaron's lesser-known sister Bobbie Jean made the news in 2002 after she was arrested for battery. The now 40-year-old was accused of assaulting two women after she claimed they attacked her younger sister Angel.

A year later, Aaron alleged that his mum Jane had removed more than $100,000 from his bank account without permission.

Following her split from Bob Carter the following year, Jane was arrested and charged with battery for beating up his new girlfriend (and future wife), Ginger Elrod.

Jane used a rock to break a window and then entered her estranged husband's home, according to a report filed by Florida's Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

She then allegedly made her way to the bedroom where Bob and Elrod were sleeping.

The report says that Jane dragged Elrod out of bed by her hair and hit her with a remote control. The Miami Herald quoted Bob Carter as saying that Elrod would not press charges, but "restraining orders are in place."

Aaron's death was confirmed earlier today in a statement released by his representatives.

"Right now it’s a really bad time we’re trying to figure out what happened and what the cause of it was,” they told the PA news agency.

“We’re just as upset as everyone and hope that fans can give thoughts and prayers to his family.”

US media outlets reported the body was found in a bathtub. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said that a suspicious death took place at Carter's property - but could not confirm the identity.
