Inside £250m new super prison with no bars on cell windows and river views

New photos have given a first glimpse behind the walls of England's newest super prison - where none of the cell windows will have bars.

£253 million HMP Five Wells will hold 1,680 inmates, making it England’s biggest prison.

Construction work is due to be finished by October, with the first prisoner arriving at the privately-run prison in January next year.

They will discover light and airy rooms with brightly coloured walls - more akin to a cheap hotel than the traditional place of punishment, the Mirror reports.

There are also unobstructed views over the River Nene and a fishing lake.

The category C jail in Northamptonshire is seen as a flagship example of the Government’s aim to create a “modern, efficient prison estate that is fit for the future” and will focus on rehabilitation.

HMP Five Wells said on Twitter: "Been a busy day on site today but took the opportunity to grab a couple of pics for you.

"One of a double room, there are 84 in total, and one of the single rooms with the FANTASTIC barless window …albeit not the best view at present #bestprisonever.”

The prison has been built on the site of the former HMP Wellingborough site, which closed in 2012, and held a maximum of 650 adult male inmates.

It has seven staggered cross-shaped buildings in place of the K-block style favoured since Victorian times.

The new cross-shaped buildings mean the corridors are broken up into smaller zones, enabling prison staff to have more direct contact with prisoners.

The buildings have been arranged around landscaped courtyards, with landscaped grounds including four football pitches.

There will be one central hub for education, vocational training and social facilities.

Older jails have come under criticism for overcrowding and filthy conditions in recent years.

HMP Five Wells will not hold the most dangerous prisoners.

When the prison's construction was announced, then-Prisons Minister Rory Stewart said: “Providing offenders with decent conditions and regimes is absolutely key to turning their lives around and ultimately keeping the public safe.”
