Insaka-Glentoran Academy will hold a tribute game for George Nkencho and Toyosi Shittabey on December 27

Insaka FC will hold a tribute game in honour of George Nkencho and Toyosi Shittabey on December 27th at 2pm on St Mochta's grounds on Porterstown Road in Clonsilla.

Insaka, Ireland's only football team for members of the African diaspora and other ethnic backgrounds in Dublin, will honour their former teammates who died in tragic circumstances in recent years.

The match has been organised in association with Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) and will feature two teams comprising players across communities in Blanch.

It had originally been scheduled to take place elsewhere in Blanchardstown during the summer but was cancelled due to fears over incursions from the far right.

Several clubs in the wider area were subsequently approached but were wary of the reaction from highly-organised anti-immigrant groups.

15-year-old Shittabey, a teammate of Nkencho, was murdered on April 2nd, 2010, after being attacked and stabbed in the heart.

The accused, Paul Barry, had previously been charged with a racially-motivated assault in the city but died of an overdose on the morning his murder trial was due to begin.

Nkencho, 27, was fatally shot by members of a Garda Armed Response Unit outside his family home in Clonee following a violent incident at a nearby shop on December 30th, 2020.

The circumstances of the death of Nkencho, who was enduring a mental health crisis, is currently being investigated by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

Insaka have a long-standing relationship with Belfast club Glentoran in combatting racism and sectarianism on the island.

East Belfast club Glentoran invited players and friends of Toyosi to Belfast to help relieve their trauma earlier this year.

"As Secretary of the Insaka-Glentoran Academy of Dublin, I wish to thank all the supporters of this tribute game including St. Mochtas FC, Cllr. John Burtchaell, Fingal County Council, the Local Sports Partnership and the Blanchardstown community at large," SARI cultural planner Ken McCue told Dublin Live.

"The game will be played under the banner of the Sport Against Racism and Glentoran FC of Belfast programme 'Living Together Through Football'.

"In the spirit of that programme, players will be drawn from all the indigenous Irish and diverse ethnic population of Blanchardstown.

"I am pleased to announce that SARI and Glentoran will be renewing our football coaching programme for boys and girls in the Blanchardstown area in early 2022."
