Inquiry opens into Battle of Orgreave during miners’ strike

  • The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Pete Wilcox, has launched a call for evidence for the official inquiry into the 1984 Battle of Orgreave.
  • The government-appointed inquiry will investigate the violent clashes between striking miners and police outside a South Yorkshire coking plant.
  • It possesses statutory powers to compel evidence from individuals, including politicians and police officers, and aims to hear from as many people as possible.
  • Submissions from individuals and organisations are invited, with a deadline of May 22, after which the next stages of the inquiry will be confirmed.
  • The inquiry panel includes former chief prosecutor Wendy Williams, historian Dr Angela Sutton-Vane, former trade union leader Baroness Mary Bousted, and law lecturer Dr Joanna Gilmore.
