Inquiry into inmate's death at HMP Perth

The circumstances surrounding the death of a triple murderer - a fortnight after being taken to hospital from Perth Prison - are to be probed next month.

Sixty-six-year-old Alexander Birrell died on May 29, 2018, after being admitted to Perth Royal Infirmary two weeks earlier.

Now a fatal accident inquiry will open at Perth Sheriff Court on May 22 to establish what happened.

Birrell was jailed for a minimum of 15 years at Edinburgh High Court in 1991 for masterminding a blaze which claimed the lives of his mother-in-law, 62-year-old May McGregor, and his nieces, Karen (5) and four-year-old Kirsty Lawrie .

They died after the fire in Mrs McGregor’s maisonette at Edinburgh’s West Granton Crescent.

His son, Alexander Birrell, jnr., was jailed for life for his part in the murder and a third man, Derek Montgomery, was sentenced to 12 years after he was convicted of the lesser charge of culpable homicide.
