Inquest opens into death of woman whose body was found in River Irwell

An inquest has opened into the death of a 37-year-old woman, who was found in the River Irwell.

Malgorzata Swiatlon went missing from her home in South Radford Street, Kersal, on June 14.

Two days later, her body was recovered by underwater search teams, an inquest at Bolton Coroner's Court heard.

Police coroner's officer Stefan Wilson told the court that Miss Swiatlon was born in Poland but lived in Salford, working as a baker.

He added that she had recently 'become depressed after having Covid' and had been furloughed from work.

"On June 14, Miss Swiatlon was reported as missing by her partner," Mr Wilson said.

"She had become depressed after having Covid in February and never fully recovering.

"She had been furloughed from work and her behaviour had started to worry him.

"Later that day, a passerby saw her walking in and out of the bushes near the Kersal Wetlands.

"On June 16, the underwater search team found Miss Swaitlon's body in the River Irwell."

Alan Walsh, area coroner for Manchester West, confirmed that a preliminary cause of death has been recorded as drowning.

Prof Dr Walsh requested statements from Miss Swiatlon's GP, as well as Greater Manchester Police.

The inquest was adjourned until November 11.
