Inquest opens into death of toddler Alta Fixsler following legal fight with Royal Manchester Children's Hospital

An inquest has opened into the death of a toddler at the centre of a legal fight over her medical care.

Alta Fixsler died on October 18 aged just two-years-old at a hospice.

She had previously been receiving treatment at Royal Manchester Children's hospital, a coroner's court heard today.

Senior coroner for Manchester Nigel Meadows read out a statement from police coroner's officer Paul Devine.

Following inquiries, Mr Devine has established that Alta was born in 2018 in Manchester and that her next of kin are her parents Chaya and Abraham, the court heard.

"The circumstances of her death were that Alta suffered with hypoxia since birth and she remained in hospital in Manchester since birth," Mr Meadows said.

"Alta was transferred to a hospice for end of life care.

"Alta passed away at the hospice and her parents were with her."

Mr Meadows coroner gave directions that he should receive a statement from Alta's last treating clinician at the children's hospital, as well as information on the care she received in the time leading up to her death.

"I'm also going to direct that I obtain a report in relation to the events leading up to Alta's birth," said Mr Meadows.

Mr Meadows added: "There might have been proceedings in the High Court in relation to whether or not care would be withdrawn.

"This is not something the coroner's inquest is going to be looking at, or can look at.

"It is nothing to do with the inquest."

Mr Meadows said he will also be checking whether the children's hospital is carrying out its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the care Alta received when she was born.

"There may well be [an investigation], I don't know," he said.

The inquest was adjourned for a review hearing on December 23.
