An inquest into the death of a man who died in a horror smash in Salford has been opened.

John Hughes was killed in a crash on Bolton Road in  Pendlebury  on Sunday (July 12).

The 42-year-old was a passenger in car when it collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Both men were seriously injured.

Tragically, Mr Hughes, a taxi driver from Swinton, died as a result of his injuries.

Coroner Catherine Cundy opened the inquest into his death at Bolton Coroners' Court this afternoon (Thursady).

The inquest has been adjourned until October 16.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Hughes and Thomas Ashley, who was driving the Renault Megane at the time of the crash, just before 7am.

Mr Hughes and Mr Ashley are believed to have been friends.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News , earlier this week, Mr Ashley's family described him as 'adorable' and 'loveable'.

His mum Trisha Hagerty said the 31-year-old lived in Swinton with his girlfriend. He had a little girl.

"Tom was adorable and lovable, everybody loved him", she added.

"He was a rogue but a lovable rouge.
