Inquest opens into death of Tameside man found in abandoned car off M62

An inquest opened today into the death of a pizza delivery driver whose body was found in an abandoned car on a country lane off the M62.

Nineteen-year-old Najeebullah Nekzad, from Ashton-under-Lyne , was found dead on August 31 in a Fiat Punto in a layby near Nont Sarah's Hotel, Scammonden, West Yorkshire.

Assistant coroner Oliver Longstaff heard evidence that Najeebullah, who was born in Afghanistan, had been identified by a relative and fingerprints.

Bradford Coroner's Court heard a post mortem report by Dr Michael Parsons that the cause of death was neck injuries.

The Huddersfield Examiner reported that deputy senior investigating officer, Det Insp Ian Thornes, of West Yorkshire Police, was asked by Mr Longstaff about the possibility of any third party involvement.

He replied that there was, saying: "Yes, sir."

Mr Longstaff then asked him: "Is there any indication as to how that enquiry is likely to be continued at this time?

DI Thornes replied there was a very detailed investigation taking place with input from Greater Manchester Police.

He explained that three arrests had been made but all three men had been "released under investigation."

The inquest was adjourned pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Earlier this month police released pictures of three potential witnesses.

Detective Superintendent Pat Twiggs from the Protective Services (Crime) team, said: "I need to know happened to Najeebullah. He was a young man with his life ahead of him and I am making a direct appeal for information about what happened to him."

He said the men could hold vital information without realising.

He said: "They were in the area between 9.50am and 10.10am on Wednesday August 28.

"They were in a white coloured Vauxhall Grandland and got out of the vehicle to take pictures of the old Nont Sarah’s Hotel.

"They parked up at 9.55am and left at 9.58am in the direction of Denshaw.

"The body was left in a very remote spot - there isn’t much around so it is likely you would remember if you were in the area and had reason to stop."
